Description  Foreword to "Scaling the Accordion, Book 1":
Scaling the Accordion, Book 1 is designed to help piano accordion students become familiar with all major scales.  It also helps students develop facility with the basses.  This modem approach is a companion book to use in conjunction with other instructional books.

The sequence for this book is scale exercise, and tune for each major scale, preparing the student to play the tune composed for the scale.  After covering a major scale, add this scale to the warm-ups for each practice session.

Each exercise page starts with a basic scale exercise.  The other exercises on the page are based on the tune that follows.  Repeat each exercise many times.  This is a model for practicing music.  Identify the challenging passages and practice them many times, independently of the tune.  This makes the tune much easier to play!

Each tune was composed to help the student become more familiar with the notes and sounds of the scale.  The teacher can also use the tunes to help the student with dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and expression.

Scale fingerings are included to help students develop proper habits.  The fingerings on the major scale page are standard fingerings.  Becoming familiar with standard fingerings helps students assign their own fingerings in other music they encounter.  Fingerings for the exercises and for the tunes provide a foundation for any alternative fingerings that a teacher might wnat to show students.

I hope you have lots of fun with the accordion as you go through this book!Valarie Morris

Review of Scaling the Accordion Book 1:
"Scaling the Accordion fulfills an important need in the study of the accordion, a need that has been largely overlooked in prior accordion courses.  This study, with its focused exercises and accompanying tunes that are fun to play, will facilitate learning the major scales."

The San Francisco Accordion Chamber Ensemble (ACE)
