Description  Foreword to "Scaling the Accordion, Book 2":
Scaling the Accordion, Book 2 includes advanced scale exercises and tunes as a continuation of the introduction to major scales in Book 1.  Both books help you to gain facility with Stradella basses and are companion books to use in conjunction with other instructional books.

As in Book 1, standard scale fingerings are shown to help you develop proper habits and to help you to assign fingerings in other music.  The fingerings in the exercises and tunes are suggestions.  Alternative fingerings might sometimes work better for you.

These exercises cover a wide range of topics in music, including intervals for ear training.  After becoming comfortable with an exercise, you can play it in other keys.  This is called transposing, which is very helpful in developing your musicianship and ability to play new tunes more quickly, with more facility and confidence.

When practicing exercises, experiment playing with different switches.  Practice slowly at first and repeat each exercise many times.  When you practice new tunes slowly to get the correct patterns in your fingers, your fingers will soon easily move faster.  Metronome markings are shown for each tune to indicate its final tempo.

Select a bass switch you like for each tune,  After learning the notes in a tune, focus on dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and expression.  This is what helps give musicality to music.  Most important in experssing the character of different music is your interpretation and the feeling and emotion within you that you transfer to the music.  Music comes from your heart and soul.

I hope you enjoy playing these exercises and tunes and that you have a lifetime of pleasure playing your accordion!

Reviews of Scaling the Accordion, Book 2:
"Valarie Morris has written some challenging and interesting music for development of both the technical and mental requirements for playing the accordion well."

Joan Cochran Sommers,
Professor of Music and Assistant Dean
University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music

"Valarie Morris's Scaling the Accordion Book 2 is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise mundane history of exercise literature for the piano accordion.  The clever titles and challenging exercise songs in each of the twelve keys are sure to easily hold the student's interest, while helping them painlessly learn to use basses in the often neglected nether regions of the instrument."
